Kidnap & Ransom, an upsurge of violence

Armed raids, bag snatchings, hostage takings, ransom demands (Kidnap & Ransom)... we are facing an upsurge of violence and kidnapping all over the world. All types of organizations - firms, humanitarian associations, NGO’s, consular services - sending staff in dangerous countries, are likely to face these situations, experienced as a crisis.

Crisis for the structure of the kidnapped person, this is also a crisis for his family. If the conflict hardens, it is managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Ministry of Defense and becomes a general interest topic for the nation and the public starts to follow the various stages of the hostage taking. This is what we have seen during the kidnapping of Ingrid Bétancourt (Colombia, 2002), Florence Aubenas (Iraq, 2005) and Christian Chesnot et Georges Malbrunot (Iraq, 2004).

Iraq, Nigeria, Darfur, Somalia, Colombia, Algeria... many destinations among others where humanitarians, businessmen, or boat crews run the risk to be kidnapped for ransom cons. The International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) limits its presence in some areas considered too dangerous for its staff (Somalia, Afghanistan, Yemen). The latest kidnappings against their teams -Gauthier Lefèvre, West Darfur and Laurent Maurice, Chad- have fortunately had a happy ending. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, a swiss delegate and his seven employees have been kidnapped on Friday the 9th of august 2010.

Precautions mentioned in "Conseils aux voyageurs" posted on the Ministry of Foreign affairs’ internet site, are the essential information to know. Habits can cause inattention and cases of false invitations in a country to the attention of businessmen have already been reported.

To develop a complementary offer to its services in Security for International Projects (from preparation to the journey to the escort in the country), Global Synergy Group has contacted the broker Marsh, a leading global insurance broker and risk consultancy business, to establish a partnership Kidnap & Ransom.
